-12x = 72

You want just x on the left, so you need to divide -12x by
-12 so that the -12's will cancel out and leave just x.
But if we divide the left side by -12 we must also divide
the right side by -12:

%28-12x%29%2F%28-12%29 = 72%2F%28-12%29

Cancel and get x on the left side and we divide top and
bottom of 72%2F%28-12%29 and get -6

%28cross%28-12%29x%29%2F%28cross%28-12%29%29 = cross%2872%29%5E%28-6%29%2F%28cross%28-12%29%29

     x = -6
