Question 709611: Help please, my question is:
If I jump in my car and reach a speed of 60KLM/HR in 5 seconds. What is my acceleration?
I originally thought 12 KLM/Hr, but dad says that is wrong. At the start I'm going slow, and then by the 5 second point in time, I'm travelling at 60 KLM/ HR.
Thanks.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
At the start your speed is 0 km/hr. After moving and accelerating for 5 seconds your speed is 60 km/hr. Acceleration is [change in rate] divided by [change in time].

Here the units are changed first to seconds instead of hours, but your purposes may justify not other time units.

(60 km/hour) * (1 hour/60 min) * (1 min/60 sec) = 1/60 km/sec

Look at the data.
final rate = 1/60 km/sec
initial rate = 0 km/sec
final time = 5 sec
initial time = at 0 sec

Acceleration = %281%2F60-0%29%2F%285-0%29=%281%2F60%29%2F5
=5%2F60=highlight%281%2F12%29, in units of highlight%28km%2Fs%5E2%29

-------------------------
60 km/hr = 1 km/min = 1/60 km/sec
-----------
a = (1/60)/5 = 1/300 km/sec/sec
a = 10/3 meters/sec/sec
