This is a trinomial since there are 3 monomials (or terms) that are summed up. This is also a polynomial since there are 3 terms summed up. All trinomials are polynomials, so if you see x in the denominator, x with a fractional exponent, or x with a negative exponent, etc. then the expression is not a polynomial or trinomial.

9x%5E2+-10xy+%2B+y%5E2
.
This is a trinomial because it contains three terms.
.
If it were just y%5E2 it would be a monomial because that is only one term.
.
Similarly if it were just -10xy it would be a monomial because that is also only one term.
.
If it were 9x%5E2+%2B+y%5E2 it would be a binomial because it has two terms.
.
If it were 9x%5E2+-+10xy it would also be a binomial because it has two terms.
.
Just remember: mono = 1; bi = 2; tri = 3
.
Hope this helps.
