Question 707311: Help please!
In a game, 12 out of a baseball team's 27 outs were fly balls. 25% of the outs were made by infielders and 100% of the outs made by outfielders were fly balls.
Write a linear system you can use to findt the number of outs made by infielders and the number of outs made by outfielders. (Hint: write one equation for the total number of outs and another for the number of fly ball outs.)
Graph your linear system.
How many outs were made by infielders? How many outs were made by outfielders?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! In a game, 12 out of a baseball team's 27 outs were fly balls.
25% of the outs were made by infielders and 100% of the outs made by outfielders were fly balls.
Write a linear system you can use to find the number of outs made by infielders and the number of outs made by outfielders.
:
Let x = no. of infield outs
let y = no. of out field outs (all flyouts)
(I guess they don't have any strike outs)
:
1.0x + 1y = 27; total outs
.25x + 1y = 12; total fly outs
--------------------------------subtraction eliminates y, find x
.75x = 15
x = 15/.75
x = 20 infielder total outs
.25(20) = 5 infield flyouts
:
y = 27 - 20
y = 7 outfield outs
:
Check using total flyouts
5 + 7 = 12
.
Graph your linear system. total outs: y = (27-x) & flyouts: y = (12-.25x)
Red = outs
green = flyouts
blue: y = 7 reference, intersect at 20, 7 (20 infield outs, 7 outfield outs)
