: Use the ac test to determine which of the following trinomial can be factored. Find the values of m and n for each trinomial that can be factored.
x^2 + 2x - 15
________________________
x^2 - 3x + 7
I am having trouble figuring these out. Can someone help explain this to me so I can better understand this. Thanks This question is from textbook Beginning Algebra
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Use the ac test to determine which of the following trinomial can be factored. Find the values of m and n for each trinomial that can be factored.
x^2 + 2x - 15
WRITE 2 FACTORS OF -15 (CONSTANT TERM )SO THAT THEIR SUM =+2(COEFFICIENT OF X)
WE FIND +5*(-3)=-15 AND +5-3=2
HENCE WRITE 2X AS +5X-3X
X^2+5X-3X-15
=X(X+5)-3(X+5)
=(X-3)(X+5)
________________________
x^2 - 3x + 7
IN THE SAME WAY AS ABOVE ...WE CANT SPLIT 7 HENCE THIS HAS NO RATIONAL FACTORS.
IN FACT IT HAS NO REAL FACTORS AS DISCRIMINANT = (-3)^2-4*7=9-28 IS NEGATIVE
I am having trouble figuring these out. Can someone help explain this to me so I can better understand this. Thanks
