Question 706480: Hi, I'm just a mum trying to recall how to multiply out the brackets and simplify the equation to help my son with his homework. We understand how to multiply out of brackets but, we're not confident about whether we need to + or -. For example: 2(5x+6)-5(2x+2), I'm not sure if the answer is 10x+12-10x+10 or 10x+12-10x-10 (i know we need to simplify it further, but we get stuck on this first step as we're not sure if the last calculation is -5x2 or 5x2? Just need help with understanding the rules for when it's a plus or a minus (we know that no sign equals a plus number. Would be great if you could offer some examples.Thank you so much for any help you can offer.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! 2(5x+6)-5(2x+2)
---
= 10x + 12 -10x -10
-----
=(10x-10x) + (12-10)
---
= 0 + 2
----
= 2
=====================
Note: If you will Google "signed numbers in Algebra"
you will see lots of sites on your topic and plenty
of examples.

Thanks for helping.
