Question 704532: Yeah, I don't understand the addition method. I've been stuck on this question for a while now.
x+y=3
x-y=5
I have to solve for each variable and then have them check out. I've done it multiple different ways and it won't work. Help?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x + y = 3
x - y = 5
------------adding eliminates y, find x
2x + 0 = 8
x = 8/2
x = 4
:
In the 1st equation, replace x with 4, and find y
x + y = 3
y = 3 - 4
y = -1
:
In the 2nd equation, check the solutions, replace x and y
4 - (-1) = 5
5 + 1 = 5
