Question 703368: You leave your house at 8 am travelling at an average speed of 50 miles per hour. Your brother leaves the same house at 9am an average speed of 60 miles per hour. How far apart will you be from your brother at noon.
I know it is d=rt but I'm having difficulty plugging in the numbers. I know you add 50+60 to make 110 since they are going opposite directions, but from there I am stuck.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You leave your house at 8 am traveling at an average speed of 50 miles per hour. Your brother leaves the same house at 9am an average speed of 60 miles per hour. How far apart will you be from your brother at noon.
----
Your DATA:
rate = 50 mph ; time = 4 hrs ; distance = 4*50 = 200 miles
========
Brother's DATA:
rate = 60 mph ; time = 3 hrs ; distance = 3*60 = 180 miles
-----
Assuming they go in opposite directions they will be 200+180 = 380 miles apart

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
D=RT
D=50*4
D=200 MILES. FORMULA FOR THE FIRST TO LEAVE.
D=60*3 FORMULA FOR THE SECOND TO LEAVE.
D=180 MILES.
200-180=20 MILES APART.

Are you sure they're traveling in opposite directions?
It doesn't exactly say that. It just asks you for their
distance apart. I can solve it both ways, just in case.
----------------
Traveling in opposite directions:
You have a 1 hour head start over brother.
+d+=+50%2A1+
+d+=+50+ mi
-------------
Now start a stop watch when your brother leaves
Let +d%5B1%5D+ = the distance he travels until noon
+t+=+3+ hrs
+d%5B1%5D+=+60%2A3+
+d%5B1%5D+=+180+ mi
----------------
Let +d%5B2%5D+ = your distance when stop watch starts
+d%5B2%5D+=+50%2A3+
+d%5B2%5D+=+150+
+d%5B2%5D+%2B+50+=+150+%2B+50+
+d%5B2%5D+%2B+50+=+200+
+d%5B1%5D+%2B+d%5B2%5D+%2B+50+=+180+%2B+150+%2B+50+
+d%5B1%5D+%2B+d%5B2%5D+=+380++
They are 380 mi apart at noon
=======================
If they travel in the same direction:
Just subtract the distances
+200+-+180+=+20+
They are 20 mi apart and you are ahead of brother
