Type I error is incorrectly rejecting a null hypothesis that is actually true. Example: Someone makes the claim that the mean rejection rate of hypertel blivots manufactured on Tuesday is 2 rejections per 100 manufactured. You perform an analysis of the data and conclude that the actual mean rejection rate is different than 2 per 100 by a statistically significant amount so you reject the null hypothesis that the mean is actually equal to 2 per 100. However, the mean actually IS 2 per 100. Therefore you have made a Type I error.

Type II error is incorrectly accepting a null hypothesis that is actually false. In the above example, you make the same null hypothesis and perform the analysis. Your analysis leads you to accept the 2 per 100 mean, but the mean rejection rate is actually different from 2 per 100.

Note, neither of thes errors necessarily has anything to do with whether or not you performed the mathematics correctly. Incorrect analysis and/or mathematics COULD be a source of either type of error, but so could random errors in your data sampling.

You can also say that a Type I error (aka error of the first kind) is the same as convicting an innocent person, while a Type II error (aka error of the second kind) is the same as letting a guily person go free.

Let's translate this into a mathematical equation word for word...
4 + 2x = 6x -8
subtract 2x from both sides
4 = 4x - 8
Add 8 to both sides
12 = 4x
divide both sides by 4
3 = x
or x = 3
