Replace the x in the equation with the x-coordinate of the ordered pair. Replace the y in the equation with the y-coordinate of the ordered pair. Do the arithmetic required to determine if the result is a true statement or not. If it is a true statement, then the ordered pair is an element of the solution set of the equation. Otherwise, not.

Just replace x with 3, and see if y = -31
y = -9(3) + 4
y = -27 + 4
y = -23, the ordered pair 3,-31, is NOT a solution
