You can put this solution on YOUR website! let two consecutive integers be: x, (x+1)
:
Just write an equation for exactly what it says
:
"The product of two consecutive integers in 1 more then their sum."
x(x+1) = x + (x+1) + 1
Combine the the like terms, arrange as a quadratic equation on the left
x^2 + x = 2x + 2
x^2 + x - 2x - 2 = 0
x^2 - x - 2 = 0
Factors to
(x-2)(x+1) = 0
Two solutions
x = 2
and
x = -1
:
2, 3 are the two integers
but
-1, 0 will also work in the equation (Most consider 0 an integer)
