a). 8x - (3x - 5) = 40
8x-3x+5=40
5x=35
x=7

b). 7(3x + 6) = 11 - (x + 2)
21x+42 = 11-x-2
22x=-44
x=44/22
x=2

c). -7 + 9x = 9x - 7
This is an identy; it is true for all values of x.
