Question 700954: The sum of two numbers is 55. The qoutient obtained by dividing the larger number by the smaller number is 2, with a remainder of 7. Find the two numbers.
I would be grateful if u solve this, it is from the chapter 'simultaneous equations'.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The sum of two numbers is 55. The qoutient obtained by dividing the larger number by the smaller number is 2, with a remainder of 7. Find the two numbers.
-------
Equations:
x + y = 55
x/y = 2
----
Rearrange:
x + y = 55
x = 2y
----
Substitute for "x" and solve for "y":
2y + y = 55
3y = 55
y = 55/3 = 18 1/3
-----
Solve for "x":
x = 2y
x = 2(55/3)
x = 115/3 = 36 2/3
------

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the numbers = +x+ and +y+
given:
(1) +x+%2B+y+=+55+
Assume that +y+ is the larger number
(2) +y%2Fx+=+2+%2B+7%2Fx+
--------------------
Multiply both sides of (2) by +x+
(2) +y+=+2x+%2B+7+
(2) +-2x+%2B+y+=+7+
-----------------
Subtract (2) from (1)
(1) +x+%2B+y+=+55+
(2) +2x+-+y+=+-7+
+3x+=+48+
+x+=+16+
and, since
(2) +y+=+2x+%2B+7+
(2) +y+=+2%2A16+%2B+7+
(2) +y+=+39+
The numbers are 16 and 39
check:
(2) +y%2Fx+=+2+%2B+7%2Fx+
(2) +39%2F16+=+2+%2B+7%2F16+
(2) +39+=+2%2A16+%2B+7+
(2) +39+=+32+%2B+7+
(2) +39+=+39+
OK
