Question 70072: please explain...adult tickets for a play cost $20 and child ticket cost $1...if there were 26 people at a performance and the theater collected $349 from ticket sales, how many children attended the play?
x=adult ticket for the play

You can put this solution on YOUR website! adult tickets for a play cost $20 and child ticket cost $1...if there were 26 people at a performance and the theater collected $349 from ticket sales, how many children attended the play?
x=the number ofadult tickets sold; Value is 20x dollars
y=the number of child tickets sold; value is 1y dollars
-------------
EQUATIONS:
x+y=26
20x+y=349
---------
y=-x+26
Substitute into the 2nd equation to get:
20x-x+26=349
19x=323
x=17 (number of adult tickets sold)
y=-17+26=9 (number of child tickets sold)
