Question 700657: I'm having trouble with a word problem in my math class. The question is: "Five students took an algebra test. The average scores was 84. Four of the scores were 96, 68, 79, and 85. What score did the fifth student get?" I don't even know where to begin with this problem. Can you help? Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source):
If the average of data elements is , then the sum of all data elements must be .
Hence, if your five people had an average of 84, then the sum of all 5 scores must be 5 times 84. Since you know 4 of the scores (and therefore are a simple addition problem away from knowing the sum of 4 of the scores), simple subtraction tells you the fifth one.
