Question 698959: Please help me with this algebra problem.
Use the fact that the diameter of the largest particle that can be moved by a stream varies approximately directly as the square of the velocity of the stream.
A stream of velocity v can move particles of diameter d or less. By what factor does d increase when the velocity is doubled?
This problem is about direct variation and so far this is what I have:
d=kv^2
d=k(2v)^2
d=4kv^2
I don't know what to do next. Please explain and answer. Thank you!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Since d = kv^2 turns into d = 4kv^2 when you double 'v', you are quadrupling d.

So d increases by a factor of 4.
