Question 698642: Hi, thanks for your help in advance!
Ok so the problem is: "Three years from now, Bob will be three times as old as he was three years ago. How old is Bob now?"
I did try to solve this problem on my own, and found that Bob is 6 years old now, but I'm not sure that that is right. I set up my problem like this:
3+x=3(x-3)
3+x=3x-9
12=2x
6=x
Is this correct? Thank you for your time and help! Found 2 solutions by stanbon, algebrahouse.com:Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source):
x + 3 = 3(x - 3) {three years from now (x + 3), Bob will be 3 times his age 3 years ago (x - 3)}
x + 3 = 3x - 9 {used distributive property}
12 = 2x {subtracted x and added 9 to each side}
x = 6 {divided each side by 2}
