if flat rectangular piece of aluminum has a perimeter of 60in, means
2%28L%2BW%29=60in
if the length is 14in longer than the width, we can write it as
L=W%2B14in.......now substitute L in 2%28L%2BW%29=60in

2%28W%2B14in%2BW%29=60in...solve for W
W%2B14in%2BW=60in%2F2
2W%2B14in=30in
2W=30in-14in
2W=16in
W=16in%2F2
highlight%28W=8in%29

now go back to L=W%2B14in, plug in W and solve for L
