( as they did ) the idea of the problem.
Just think of the entire sequence of the counting numbers:
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12, . . . etc.
Now you have to ask yourself " What scores can I NOT get
if I am limited to either a 5 or a 9, and I have to add up the
5's and 9's for a game which may be as short or as long
as you can imagine.
A certain game may look like
5,5,9,9 = 28
5,9,9,9 = 32
5,5,5,5,9 = 29
Now I will try to write out ONLY those scores that are NOT
possible:
1,2,3,4,-,6,7,8,-,-,11,12,13,-,-,16,17,-,-,-,21,22,-,
-,-,26,-,-,-,-,31,-,-,34,-,-,37,38,39,-, -, -,
Notice that there are fewer and fewer score that are not possible.
The 42 score was 5,5,5,9,9,9 and
41 was 5,9,9,9,9.
Now you understand the problem. I don't know a systematic way to
solve it, though. Maybe 39 is the largest impossible score, and
maybe not. I'm sure someone else here can solve it.

Find the largest number from 1 to 45 that cannot be made by adding 5's and 9's

= 31
---------
39 = 5*6 + 9
38 = 20 + 18
37 = 10 + 27
34 = 25 + 9
33 = 15 + 18
32 = 5 + 27

This question makes no sense to me.
From what I see, every other INTEGER-SCORE, from 32 to 44 is possible to make. Therefore, points is the largest IMPOSSIBLE score below 45, or < 45 since no combination of 5-point scores, and 9-point scores sum to 31 points.
