: This question is from a study handout, not the book per se. This is finding the inverse of a one to one function. The question is:
f(x)=7/3x-2
I start by substituting y for f(x)=y=7/3x-2
Then I switch y for x= x=7/3y-2
Next I multiple both sides of the equation by 3y-2 to elimate the fraction=
x(3y-2)=7(3y-2)
=3xy-2x=21y-14
Then I isolate the y variables= 3xy-21y=2x-14
Next I remove the common factor of 3y= 3y(x-7)=2x-14
I'm assuming the next step would be to divide both sides by x-7. That would give me: 3y=2x-14/x-7
It seems to me that would give me 3y=2, and the final answer would be y=2/3.
My answer key says the correct answer is f(inverse x)=7/3x+2/3.
No matter how many times I try this, I can't figure out where they're getting the 7/3x from.
Thank you so much for your help!

Find the inverse of:
f%28x%29+=+7%2F%283x-2%29 Rewrite as:
y+=+7%2F%283x-2%29 Swap the x and y.
x+=+7%2F%283y-2%29 Solve for y. Multiply both sides by (3y-2)
x%283y-2%29+=+7 Divide both sides by x.
%283y-2%29+=+7%2Fx Add 2 to both sides.
3y+=+7%2Fx+%2B+2 Divide both sides by 3.
