6 miles to the gallon is the same as 6 miles for $3.61. So,

6 miles is to $3.61 as 490 miles is to $X

"Is to" means "over" and "as" means "equals". So

6 miles OVER $3.61 EQUALS 490 miles OVER $X.

6%2F3.61%22%22=%22%22490%2FX

6X = 490(3.61)

6X = 1768.9
 X = 1768.9%2F6
 X = $294.82 rounded to the nearestr penny.
