Question 6938: Could you please assist me in the following two questions and show all the work used to get to the answer.
Evaluate: − │─3│
Write one subset of A={1,3,5,7,9,11}.
Answer by glabow(165) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The meaning of |a| is: what is the magnitude of the number a, ignoring its sign.
|3| = 3. |-3| = 3. One is positive 3, the other is negative 3. But they both have the magnitude of 3.
So, -|-3| is the same as -3.
A subset is a set of elements that are contained in another set. You have a set
A = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11}. Any set that contains elements that are in A is a subset of A. And A is called the superset.
So B = {1} is a subset. C = {1, 7, 11} is a subset. And so on. Even a set X = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9 ,11} is a subset of A! However, a subset that does not contain all the elements of its superset is called a proper subset. (Just one more) A set with no elements in it is called the empty set. And the empty set is a subset of any other set.
