Question 692368: I need help on 5 questions on my math problems my teacher made up. Please help me solve this problem that includes an equation and a explanation please.
1. Harry buys American cheese at a deli. He buys 1/4 pound of American cheese at a cost of x dollars per pound. IF he pays $12.25 for 2.5 pounds of American cheese, what is the cost per pound?
2. Charlie has a $30 smoothie gift card. Each time he uses the card to buy a smoothie, $2 is deducted from his card. If the balance on his card today is $12, how many smoothies has he purchased with the card?
3. Beth and David are using leather to make bracelets. Beth uses y inches of leather. David has 7 more inches of leather than Beth. They have a combined total of 77 inches of leather. What is the value of y?
4.The number of birds that Vikram saw on a nature walk is 1 less than 4/5 the number of birds that Shaya saw. Shaya saw a total of 10 birds. How many birds did Vikram see?
7. Julio bought a stereo that cost $412 and a CD storage case that cost x dollars. He paid the clerk $500 in cash and received $3 in change. Assuming there was no tax, how much did the CD storage case cost?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A fifth grader would solve the problems without equations, but let's inject some x's (and y's) into the solutions, just for algebra practice.

1. x = cost of American cheese, per pound (in $)
The cost for 2.5 pounds of American cheese at $x per pound is 2.5x
IF Harry has to pay $12.25 for 2.5 pounds of American cheese, then
2.5x=12.25 --> 2.5x%2F2.5=12.25%2F2.5 --> highlight%28x=4.9%29
For American cheese, the cost per pound is $highlight%284.90%29

2. Charlie has bought x smoothies at $2 per smothie,
so $2x has been deducted from his initial $30 smoothie gift card.
His balance today is $30-2x
If the balance on his card today is $12,
30-2x=12 --> 30-2x-30=12-30 --> -2x=-18 --> -2x%2F%28-2%29=-18%2F%28-2%29 --> highlight%28x=9%29
He has purchased highlight%289%29 smoothies with the card.

3. Beth uses y inches of leather.
David has 7 more inches of leather than Beth, so he has y%2B7 inches of leather.
Their combined total is y%2B%28y%2B7%29=2y%2B7 inches of leather.
They have a combined total of 77 inches of leather, so
2y%2B7=77 --> 2y%2B7-7=77-7 --> 2y=70 --> 2y%2F2=70%2F2 --> highlight%28y=35%29

4. On a nature walk, Vikram saw x number of birds,
and that number is 1 less than 4/5 the number of birds that Shaya saw.
Shaya saw a total of 10 birds.
So Vikram saw x=%284%2F5%2910-1 --> x=40%2F5-1 --> x=8-1 --> highlight%28x=7%29
Vikram saw highlight%287%29 birds

7. Julio bought a stereo that cost $412%29%29%29+and+a+CD+storage+case+that+cost+%7B%7B%7Bx dollars.
The total he had to pay was $412%2Bx
Since he paid the clerk $500 in cash,
he expected to receive
$500-%28412%2Bx%29 in change.
He received $3 in change, and there was no tax, so
500-%28412%2Bx%29=3 --> 500-412-x=3 --> 88-x=3 --> 88-x-88=3-88 --> -x=-85 --> highlight%28x=85%29
The CD storage case cost $highlight%2885%29
