Question 685575: Wendy decided to ride her bicycle to the mall and back. On the way there she was pumped to go shopping and averaged 12 miles per hour. On the way home, Wendy was very sad because she didnt buy anything, she averaged only 8 miles per hour. If the round trip took a total of 2 hours, how long did it take Wendy to come home from the mall?
I know that you are supposed to multiply the rate by the time to get the distance but I dont know how to set the problem up.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Time to mall + return time = 2
t=d/r
r= 12 mph going
r= 8 mph return
let distance be x
x/12 +x/8 =2
LCD = 24
multiply equation by 24
2x+3x=24*2
5x=48
x= 9.6 miles
t= d/r
r=8 on return
t = 9.6/8
t= 1.2 hours on return
