Question 68528: Kevin lives on the grounds of Whatsamatta University, for which he performs grounds keeping. Each day he works, the University owes him $80; but for each day that he doesn't work, Kevin owes Whatsamatta University $30 rent. All debts are paid at the end of the month. Suppose that at the end of January 2007, the university owes Kevin a total of $1,160. How many days did Kevin work in the month of January?
I can't get any equation that works. Thanks!

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Kevin lives on the grounds of Whatsamatta University, for which he performs grounds keeping.
--------------------
Let number of days he works be "x"; Value to him is 80x dollars
Number of days he does not work is "31-x" : Loss to him is 30(31-x)=930-30x
---------------------------
EQUATION:
earned - lost =1160 dollars
80x - (930-30x) = 1160
110x - 930= 1160
110x = 2090
x=19 days ( number of days he worked)
31-x=31-19= 12 (number of days he did not work)
Cheers,
Stan H.
