Question 684837: A passenger plane made a trip to Las-Vegas and back. On the trip there it flew 400 mph and on the return trip it went 480 mph. How far was the trip if it took one hour more for the plane to fly there than to return home? How long was the trip there? The return trip?
-I am confused on what to do on this question. Could you please help me... I know rate*time&distance=distance but i'm confused on this question.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A passenger plane made a trip to Las-Vegas and back.
On the trip there it flew s=400+mph
and on the return trip it went s%5B1%5D=480+mph.
the trip there: d=s%2A%28t%2B1h%29...it took one hour more for the plane to fly
the return trip: d=s%5B1%5D%2At
we know that distance d is same in both directions; so, we have
s%2A%28t%2B1h%29=s%5B1%5D%2At....plug in s=400+mph and s%5B1%5D=480+mph.
400+mph%2A%28t%2B1h%29=480+mph%2At.....solve for t
400+mph%2At%2B400+mph%2A1h=480+mph%2At
400+mph%2At-480+mph%2At%2B400+mph%5E2=0
%28400+mph-480+mph%29t%2B400+mph%5E2=0
-80+mph%2At=-400+mph%5E2
t=%28-400+mph%5E2%29%2F%28-80+mph%29
t=5h...............now we can find the distance

d=s%5B1%5D%2At
d=480+%28mil%2Fh%29%2A5h
d=480+%28mil%2Fcross%28h%29%29%2A5cross%28h%29
d=2400mil
check the other direction:
d=s%2A%28t%2B1h%29
d=400+%28mil%2Fh%29%2A6h
d=400+%28mil%2Fcross%28h%29%29%2A6cross%28h%29
d=2400mil

Let distance one-way be D
Then: D%2F400+-+1+=+D%2F480
6D – 2,400 = 5D ---- Multiplying by LCD, 2,400
6D – 5D = 2,400

D, or distance = highlight_green%282400%29 miles

You can do the check!!
