You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The ratio of ( accepted ) / ( not accepted ) = +14%2F31+
Let +x+ = number who were accepted
+1665+-+x+ = number who were not accepted
--------------
+14%2F31+=+x+%2F+%28+1665+-+x+%29+
+14%2A%28+1665+-+x+%29+=+31x+
+23310+-+14x+=+31x+
+45x+=+23310+
+x+=+518+
518 were accepted
check:
+1665+-+518+=+1147+
+518+%2F+1147+=+.4516+
+14%2F31+=+.4516+
OK

For every 14 students who were accepted for admission to a particular university, there were 31 students who were not accepted. If 1665 students applied, how many were accepted for admission?

Ratio accepted: not accepted = 14:31, or 14%2F31

Let multiplicative factor = x
Then: 14x + 31x = 1,665
45x = 1,665
x = 37

As fraction accepted = 14%2F45, then amount accepted = %2814%2F45%291665, or highlight_green%28518%29
