You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +a+ = donkey's original number of bales
Let +b+ = horses original number of bales
given:
After horse gives donkey 1 bale,
donkey has +a+%2B+1+ bales
horse has +b+-+1+ bales
and
(1) +a+%2B+1+=+%281%2F2%29%2A%28+b+-+1+%29+
------------------------
After donkey gives horse 1 bale,
donkey has +a+-+1+ bales
horse has +b+%2B+1+ bales
and
(2) +b+%2B+1+=+3%2A%28+a+-+1+%29+
------------------------
(1) +2a+%2B+2+=+b+-+1+
(1) +2a+-+b+=+-3+
and
(2) +b+%2B+1+=+3a+-+3+%29+
(2) +3a+-+b+=+4+
----------------
Subtract (1) from (2)
(2) +3a+-+b+=+4+
(1) +-2a+%2B+b+=+3+
+a+=+7+
and
(2) +3a+-+b+=+4+
(2) +3%2A7+-+b+=+4+
(2) +21+-+b+=+4+
(2) +b+=+17+
The donkey started with 7 bales
The horse started with 17 bales
check:
horse gives donkey 1 bale
They have 8 and 16, donkey has 1/2 of horses
donkey gives horse 1 bale
They have 6 and 18, horse has 3 times donkey's
OK

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x carried by horse
y carried by donkey
y+1 = (1/2)(x-1) multiplied by 2
2y + 2 = x - 1 : x = 2y + 3
x+1 = 3(y-1)
...
2y + 3 + 1 = 3y - 3
4 + 3 = 3y - 2y
highlight_green%28y+=+7%29 carried by donkey
x = 3(7)-4 = 21-4 = highlight_green%28x=17%29 carried by horse

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

a donkey carrying x bales of cloth
and
a horse were carrying y bales of cloth

The donkey said to the horse "If you give me one of your bales, i shall carry half as much as you."

x%2B1=y%2F2..............1

If you give me one of yours, replied the horse, I will be carrying 3x's as much as you.
3x=y%2B1..............2

solve the system:

x%2B1=y%2F2..............1

3x=y%2B1..............2
______________________________

x%2B1=y%2F2..............1..both sides multiply by 2 and solve for y
y=2x%2B2....substitute in 2

3x=%282x%2B2%29%2B1..............2..solve for x
3x=2x%2B2%2B1
3x-2x=3
highlight%28x=3%29......the number of bales that donkey was carrying
now find y
y=2x%2B2
y=2%2A3%2B2
highlight%28y=8%29......the number of bales that horse was carrying
