Question 68162This question is from textbook A Graphical Approach to Algebra and Trigonometry
: The table lists the average tution and fees at public colleges and universities for selected years.
Year 1985 1990 1995 1999 2004
Tuition and
Fees ($s) 1242 1809 2860 3356 5132
(a) Find the equation of the least-squares regression line that models the data.(b) Graph the data and the regression line in the same viewing window. (c) Estimate tuition and fees in 2006. (d) Use the model to predict tuition and fees in 2010.
I am really bad at this. Can you explain how you got the equation? How you got those exact numbers in (a)?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The table lists the average tution and fees at public colleges and universities for selected years.
Year 1985 1990 1995 1999 2004
Tuition and
Fees ($s) 1242 1809 2860 3356 5132
-----------------
If you have a TI calculator
Enter the years in list L1
Enter the averages in list L2
Run the LinReg(ax+b) function against L1, L2, Y1 to get the regression equation
into Y=.
----------------------
(a) Find the equation of the least-squares regression line that models the data.
The regression equation: Tuition&Fees = 198.49(year)-393,033.87
---------------------------------
(b) Graph the data and the regression line in the same viewing window.
Can't do that on this site.
------------------------
(c) Estimate tuition and fees in 2006.
Tuition(2006)=198.49(2006)-393,033.87
Tuition(2006) = $5142.60
I got this using the TABLE function of the TI-83
-----------------------
(d) Use the model to predict tuition and fees in 2010.
Tuition(2010) is approx $5936.60 according to the TABLE.
