add +x+ to both their ages
+48+%2B+x+ = Grandmother's age +x+ years in the future
+8+%2B+x+ = Granddaughter's age +x+ years in the future
given:
+48+%2B+x+=+3%2A%28+8+%2B+x+%29+

+48+%2B+x+=+24+%2B+3x+
+2x+=+24+
+x+=+12+
and
+48+%2B+x+=+48+%2B+12+
+48+%2B+x+=+60+
and
+8+%2B+x+=+8+%2B+12+
+8+%2B+x+=+20+
