You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Write a simple equation for each statement
:
Harold was 5 years older than phidella.
H = P + 5
:
In 10 years he found that 4 times his age exceeded twice phidella's age by only 50. (Remember their ages are now (H+10) and (P+10))
:
4(H + 10) = 2(P+10) + 50
:
4H + 40 = 2P + 20 + 50
4H + 40 = 2P + 70
4H = 2P + 70 - 40
4H = 2P + 30
:
How old were Harold and Phidella in the beginning?
:
Substitute (P+5) for H in the above equation and solve for P
4(P+5) = 2P + 30
4P + 20 = 2P + 30
4P - 2P = 30 - 20
2P = 10
P = 5 years old
:
That makes H, 10 yrs old
:
:
Test our answers in the statement:
"In 10 years he found that 4 times his age exceeded twice phidella's age by only
50." (H is now 20 and P is 15)
:
4(20) = 2(15) + 50
