Question 677562: an inlet tap can fill an empty tank in 6 hiurs.it takes10 hours to fill the tank when the inlet tap and outlet tap are both opened at the same time calculate the time the outlet tap takes to empty the full tank when the inlet tap is closed

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=time it takes the outlet tap to empty the tank when the inlet tap is closed
Then the outlet tap empties at the rate of 1/x tank per hour
The inlet tap fills at the rate of 1/6 tank per hour
when both taps are open the tank fills at the rate of 1/10 tank per hour
Soooooo
1/6-1/x=1/10 multiply each term by 30x
5x-30=3x subtract 5x from each side
-2x=-30
x=15 hours---time it takes the outlet tap to empty the tank when the inlet tap is closed
CK
1/6-1/15=1/10
5/30 -2/30=1/10
3/30=1/10
1/10=1/10
Hope this helps---ptaylor
