this is called factored form. In order for this to equal zero, one of the following situations must be true...
(x-5)=0
x=5
or
(3x+1)=0
3x=-1
x=-1/3
so x can be either 5 or -1/3 these are called the zeros of a polynomial, because its when the polynomial equals zero.
