x+5y=44 replace x with (y+8) in the second equation.
(y+8)+5y=44
y+5y+8=44
6y=44-8
6y=42
y=42/6
y=6 the lesser number.
x=6+8
x=14 is the greater number.

14+5*6=44
14+30=44
44=44
