You can put this solution on YOUR website!
How many gallons of a 40 percent solution must be mixed with 60 gallons of a 22 percent solution to obtain a solution that is 30 percent alcohol?
-------
Quantity Equation: x + 60 = y
Percent Equation: 0.40x+0.22*60 = 0.30*y
------
Multiply thru 1st by 40
Multiply thru 2nd by 100
-------
40x + 40*60 = 40*y
40x + 22*60 = 30*y
------
Subtract and solve for "y"
18*60 = 10y
y = 108 gallons
----
Solve for "x":
x + 60 = y
x = 108-60
x = 48 gallons (amt. of 40% solution needed)
