Question 673649: a number increased by 5 is 24 times the reciprocal of the number. determine the number algebraically. Answer by ptaylor(2198) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let x=the number
x+5=the number increased by 5
The reciprocal of the number is 1/x
Soooo
x+5=24*(1/x) multiply each side by x
x^2+5x=24
x^2+5x-24=0 quadratic in standard form and it can be factored
(x+8)(x-3)=0
x=-8
and
x=3
So we have two answers
CK
-8+5=24/-8
-3=-3--------------ok
3+5=24/3
8=8---------------ok
Hope this helps---ptaylor
