Let x=number of nickels
Then 27-x=number of dimes
Lets deal in pennies
5x+10(27-x)=190
5x+270-10x=190 subtract 270 from each side
5x-10x=190-270
-5x=-80
x=16----number of nickels
27-x=27-16=11 ------number of dimes
CK
5*16+11*10=190
80+110=190
190=190
Another way would be:
Let x=nickels and let y=dimes
x+y=27
5x+10y=190
multiply first equation by 10
10x+10y=270
5x+10y=190
subtract
5x=80
x=16
etc.
