SOLUTION: What two positive numbers when multiplied together also equal the sum of the same two numbers?
what I have tried so far:
xy=a
x+y=a
xy=x+y
x(y-1)=y
x=y/y-1
I know the answ

I know the answer is 2 but how do I show that? Found 2 solutions by Alan3354, MathTherapy:Answer by Alan3354(69443) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! What two positive numbers when multiplied together also equal the sum of the same two numbers?
what I have tried so far:
xy=a
x+y=a
xy=x+y
x(y-1)=y
x=y/y-1
I know the answer is 2 but how do I show that?
----------
xy = x+y
xy - y = x
y*(x-1) = x
y = x/(x-1)
------------
Same as what you did.
There are an infinite number of solutions.
Pick any x and find y.
eg, 2
-----
x = 3 --> y = 3/2
x = 4 --> y = 4/3
etc

If the answer is 2, then you/the problem failed to mention that the two numbers are the same. If you'd mentioned this, then we solve as follows:
Let the number be N
Then N(N) = N + N
N(N - 2) = 0
N = 0 (ignore, since the number is positive), and (the number you claim to be the answer).
