Question 670682: I have a word problem that I just don't know how to start it! If you could answer this pretty quickly I would be really grateful! Here is the question:
Jack has 35 coins. He has three less than twice as many dimes than pennies and two more nickels than pennies. How much money does he have?
I tried to designate my variables: Pennies (P)= X Dimes (D)= 2X-3 Nickels (N)= 2+X
Then I thought that if you added them all together (P+D+N=35) Then I inserted the numbers and worked it out..I got 8.5. I checked my work and it was 33, not 35. I kust don't get it! Help! :)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Hi,
Pennies (P)= X 9
Dimes (D)= 2X-3 15
Nickels (N)= 2+X 11
This is very good work for how many of @ coins there is
X + 2X-3 + 2+X = 35 AND 4X = 36, X+=+9, How many pennies
How much money??? CENTS makes sense:
+9+%2B+10%2A15+%2B+5%2A11 = 9¢ + 150¢ + 55¢ = 214¢ 0r $2.14
