Question 669665: The stated problem: Given that the polynomial function has the given zero, find the other zeros. f(x)= x to the third minus 4x squared + 14x -20; the given zero is two.
I am able to get to the end by using division or synthetic division with a final quotient of: x squared -2x+10 then use that in a quadratic equation and end with 2 + or - 6 divided by two. My answer (which is wrong is 1+3, 1-3)The correct answer is 1+3i & 1-3i & of course -2. I don't understand. Please if you can, explain. Thanks!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
when you were on this step...
x%5E2+-+2x+%2B+1+=+-9
...
%28x-1%29%5E2+=+-9
...
x-1+=+%2B-+sqrt%28-9%29
...
x = 1+%2B-+sqrt%28-9%29
...
x = 1+%2B-+sqrt%283%2A3%2A-1%29
...
x = 1+%2B-+3sqrt%28-1%29
where i = sqrt%28-1%29
...
x = 1+%2B-+3i
...
giving the answer
1 + 3i, 1-3i and 2
