Question 669149: John drove to a distance city in 6 hours. When he returned, there was less traffic and the trip took only 5 hours. If John averaged 12 mph faster on the return trip, how fast did John travel in each direction? Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! speed = x mph forward trip -6 hours
return trip speed = x+12 mph----- 5 hours
Distance is same obviously and he took the same route.
D=rt
6x=5(x+12)
6x=5x+60
x=60
Forward speed = 60 mph
return speed = 60+12= 72 mph
