Question 66757: Hi, I need help in figuring out the following: I need to solve the problem by using an absolute value equation or inequality.
Tom’s IQ score is more than 15 point away from Jake’s. If Jake scored 110, then in what range is Tom’s score?
Thanks in advance for any guidance provided.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Start with 110, and add and subtract 15. This would give you 125 and 95. It means that Tom is either less than 95 or greater than 125.

T<95 or T>125

You could also write this as an absolute value, and it will be an EXTREMES problem!!

(Do you remember that singing group from the 1960s called the Extremes? Remember Diana Ross and the Extremes???
"STOP in the name of Math!!")

Well, the absolute value means the magnitude of the difference between Tom and Jake must be greater than 15.

This would be
|T-J| > 15
|T-110|>15
