Question 667159: Hi there, i need some help with this question:
twice a number is 60 times more than 5 times the number - what is the number?
I believe the formula should equate to:
2x = 60.(5x)
but that doesn't make any sense.
Or if it's written as: 2y = 60.(5x), then potential solutions could be: y=150, x =1
not entirely sure which is correct.
cheers,

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Your first equation is correct. Just follow through
2x+=+60+%2A+5x
2x+=+300x
x=+150x
What number times itself is equal to itself? only zero.
Do not make the mistake of saying
x+=+150x
x%2Fx+=+150
1+=+150
Why is dividing both sides above by x a mistake?? That is all good EXCEPT if x = 0, in which case the resulting x/x is undefined. Watch out for this type of thing. It happens more often then you think. If you get a strange answer .. and the algebra looks just fine ... make sure you don't have a division by zero lurking in there somewhere.
