Question 666753: Jennifer wishes to lay carpet in her new house. At the first store, the sales-
person says they will lay the carpet she chose for $18 per square yard. At the second
store, the salesperson says they will lay the same carpet for $3 per square foot. The
second salesperson says this is half the price of the first store since everyone knows
there are 3 feet per yard. Is the salesperson misleading the customer? Why or why
not?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

You say to the second salesperson, "There are 27 square feet in one square yard, so at $3 per square foot, you want to charge me $81 per square yard. Then you claim that $81 per square yard is one-half of $18 per square yard. Therefore, either you are stupid or you think I am. Either way, I'm going to do business with the other guy -- unless..."

"...you make the square foot price, installed, of any carpet I choose from your showroom to be , you complete the installation, including clean-up and removal of the old carpet, by close of business this Friday, and you promise on the life of your first-born child that you will never try to mess with a mathematician again. You have the square root of 2 minutes to decide."
