You can put this solution on YOUR website!
adults --------- x
children ----------- y
x+y = 280.........................(1)
Receipts = 140*100= 14000 cents
60x+25y=14000.....................(2)
Multiply equation (1) by -60
-60x-60y=-16800
add with (2)
-35y= -2800
y= -2800/-35
y = 80 the number of children

Answer by ReadingBoosters(3246) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Establish variables
x = adult
y = children
...
.6x + .25y = 140
x+y=280
...
Substitute x = 280-y into the first equation
...
.6(280-y) + .25y = 140
168 - .6y + .25y = 140
Combine like terms
-.6y + .25y = 140-168
-.35y = -28
Divide both sides by -.35
highlight_green%28y+=+80%29 children
