Joan recalls that the car rented for 5 days and driven for 300 miles cost 178, while the same model car rented for 4 days and driven for 500 miles cost 197. Find the daily fee and find the milage charge.

You can solve by substitution if you want too. But let's use a different method.
Take the first equation and multiply it by 4 to get

Now take the second equation and multiply that one by 5 to get

Now subtract the first modified one from the second modified one as follows
