Question 663728: if you have ten more dimes than quarters and 5 less nickles than quarters how many quarters nickles and dimes are there if you have a total of 4.75? Answer by ReadingBoosters(3246) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! x = # of dimes
y = # of quarters
z = # of nickels
x = y+10
z = y-5
.1x+.25y+.05z=4.75
Substitute x and z into the second equation
.1(y+10) + .25y + .05(y-5) = 4.75
.1y + 1 + .25y + .05y - .25 = 4.75
Group like terms
.1y + .25y + .05y = 4.75 - 1 + .25
.4y = 4
y = 10 quarters
x = 10+10 = 20 dimes
z = 10 - 5 = 5 nickels
...
Proof
.1(20)+.25(10)+.05(5)= 2 + 2.5 + .25 = 4.75
