You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x+y=17
y=-x+17
2x=y+1
--------------
2x=-x+17+1
2x=-x+18
3x=18
x=6
--------------
2*6=y+1
12-1=y
y=11
--------------
6+11=17

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
set the variables
x=smaller number
y=larger number
x+y=17
2x=1+y
Solve one of two ways
..
Option 1
2(x+y=17)
2x+2y=34 and plug in 2x
1+y+2y=34
using y, plug into x=17-y to solve for x
OR solve by
..
Option2
2x=1+y
x=1/2 + y/2 and plug in to x+y=17
(1/2 + y/2)+y=17
using y, plug into x=17-y to solve for y
..
Personally, I think option 1 is an easier and cleaner formula to solve
using y, plug into x=17-y to solve for x
