You can put this solution on YOUR website!
rectangle 1
x = l = 18 + w
y = w
rectangle 2
l = x - 6
w = y + 3
p = 2l+2w=126
Lots of substitutions!
Using rectangle 2, which is given in terms of rectangle 1
p = 2(x-6)+2(y+3)=126
p = 2((18 + w)-6) + 2(w + 3) = 126
Distribute the 2s
36 + 2w - 12 + 2w + 6 = 126
Combine like terms
4w + 36 - 12 + 6 = 126
4w +30 = 126
4w = 96
w=24=width of rectangle 1
Rectangle 1
l = 18 + 24 = 42cm length
w = 24 cm width
Rectangle 2
l = 42 - 6 = 36 cm length
w = 24 + 3 = 27 cm width
