You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The Randolphs used 12 more gal of fuel oil in October
than in September and twice as much oil in November as in September. If they
used 132 gal for the 3 months, how much was used during each month?

Let x=amount of fuel used in Sept.
Then x+12=amount of fuel used in Oct
And 2x=amount of fuel used in Nov
Now we are told that the amount of fuel used in Sept (x) plus the amount of fuel used in Oct (x+12) plus the amount of fuel used in Nov (2x) equals 132 gal. So our equation to solve is:
x+(x+12)+2x=132
collect like terms and subtract 12 from both sides:
4x=132-12
4x=120
x=30 gal ----amount used in Sept
x+12=30+12=42 gal -------------amount used in Oct
2x=2(30)=60 gal ---------------amount used in Nov
ck
30+42+60=132
132=132
Hope this helps---------------ptaylor
